Dota 2 An Online Multiplayer Video Game - 1274 Words

In 2015, Dota 2, an online multiplayer video game, held a competition that consisted of over sixteen teams and 80 players from all over the globe. The action-packed event located in Seattle, Washington had a prize pool of over 18 million dollars. Since its conception in 1972 with the iconic game Pong, the video games have boomed into a 15-billion-dollar industry. Video games have now turned into an eSport, with thousands of athletes participating and even Call of Duty, a shooter game, hosted at X-Games. In addition to that, the United States now recognize eSports players as professional athletes, this means players can now have a visa under that title. Video games now have been tightly integrated into popular culture that second thoughts about video games have arisen. Video games have gained popularity mostly in teen and mature rated games. According to researched conducted by The Entertainment Software Association(ESA), the U.S. association representing video game publishing compani es, found that within the top 20 best-selling video games in 2015, half of which are rated teen or mature. With so many violent video games sold, a great deal of controversy has arisen, question the effects of video games in the most popular age group, young children. In 2012, a tragic school shooting occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The perpetrator, a 20-year-old Adam Lanza, shot 20 children and six staff members fatally.
